Apologies this is arriving late, some recipients did not recieve the email this morning, so we are resending it.

It's Sophie Perry here again, I am once again stepping in for Jamie while he is enjoying his holidays – and he definitely picked the right week for it!

It's been a busy week for news.

Keir Starmer resigning, the draft Conversion Practices Bill dropping and the Lemkin Institute labelling the EHRC's Code of Practice "genocidal in nature" – all during an unprecedented heatwave? Give the queers a break.

This week has been a lot to say the least, and there is much to unpack.

But before we get to queer news I have a note from Jamie on the simple steps you can do to support the work taking place at QueerAF:

Week by week, QueerAF’s work is to bring you queer accountability journalism, so you can navigate the misinformation in the media. But that's just our short term goal. In the long term, we're working to change the media, by investing in a new generation of LGBTQIA+ journalists who can work in the sector and switch off the hate at its source.

This Pride month, we're asking you to take two quick actions every week, that you can do in your jammies while reading this newsletter, to help QueerAF change the media – and fuel activists all over the UK.

This week, we're asking you to help us cross the finish line in our Pride Month membership drive. As we write this, we're just one member away from our target of 50 new members. One!

If QueerAF has ever helped you understand the news, discover LGBTQIA+ history or simply feel a little less alone, now is the time to support us.

Please if you can, sign up now and grab a discount while you're at it!

And while we've nearly reached our target, the truth is the more members we have, the more journalism, podcasts and opportunities we can create for our community.

Alongside supporting our Pride Month membership drive (which comes with discounts to make it super accessible), this week we're asking you to forward this newsletter to a friend.

Unlike social media, newsletters land directly in people's inboxes. Every time you forward QueerAF to someone you know, you help queer stories travel beyond the algorithms and reach people directly.

If everyone reading this newsletter forwarded it to just one person, we'd double the number of people discovering queer journalism overnight.

It's a tiny action, but it makes a huge difference to the future of independent queer media. Thank you. Now, let's get into this week's news.

Thank you.

In pride,
Jamie Wareham - QueerAF founder

Understand the LGBTQIA+ headlines and keep track of the latest queer content and perspectives. QueerAF is written by Jamie Wareham, and a different queer creative each week.

💬 This week:

  • Draft Conversion Practices Bill: The draft bill is filled with loopholes. We unpack it in depth.
  • Keir Starmer: It's official: Keir Starmer has issued his resignation as prime minister. We outline his legacy on LGBTQ+ rights.
  • Spotlight: Looking for something hopeful? The Conservatives tried to halt the PATHWAYS trial and they failed – we discuss.

Skip the doomscrolling and support queer creatives instead. We are QueerAFand so are you.

Draft conversion practices bill loopholes make it “instruction manual for abuse”

TL;DR: The UK government has finally published its draft bill to ban conversion practices, but the legislation has been met with mass criticism due to loopholes that effectively make it an “instruction manual for abuse”
