QueerAF

Every Saturday, QueerAF helps you understand the queer headlines and stay on top of the latest LGBTQIA+ content - all while we support queer creatives. This week, it's written by Matilda Davies, Jamie Wareham is back to bring you the top story, and another queer creative as usual.

πŸ’¬ This week:

  • Brianna Ghey. The murder of a trans girl has exposed failures in the media’s coverage of trans lives.
  • Nicola Sturgeon. The first minister of Scotland and steadfast trans ally has resigned.
  • Culture wars. Mainstream media is letting down trans people like it has let down gay people for years, writes Len Lukowski.

Skip the doom scrolling and support queer creatives instead. We are QueerAF – and so are you.

⚠️ Content warning: While we think it’s vital to cover attacks on our community, we also understand that over-exposure to these stories - particularly for trans people - can be emotionally draining. Our top story is about Brianna Ghey, but as always, below that we have other big LGBTQIA+ stories and some more uplifting and life-affirming content. Feel free to skip ahead if you need to.

πŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ Brianna Ghey: Media must recognise its part in rising transphobia

TL;DR: Following years of media and government anti-trans messaging, a young trans person has been murdered in what appears to have been a targeted attack. Two people have been charged and the police have not yet ruled out classifying the attack as a hate crime.
