Hi, Jamie here - Iโm back! Before we get started this week I just wanted to say a big thank you.
Thank you for your overwhelming support while I was in hospital, and your understanding while I recover. I've still got a way to go, but I'm back to walking short distances working part of the week and we've resolved the transplant rejection for now. Big thanks to the existing and new members who signed up and supported during this time - your continued support over the coming months will make a huge difference to QueerAF.
And though I'm so glad to be back - hasn't it been so wonderful to extend the newsletter to five different writers over the last month? To Rowan, Jon, Sarah, Fran and Marty thank you. Also big up to Rhys and Jules for your production and sub-editing work.
We know lots of you found our guest editors incredible - so we've opened up a dedicated feedback box here for you to send a message to them. It's also a great place to give us feedback on whether or not to have guest editors more often. Each message you send comes with a little gift.
๐ฌ This week:
- Andrew Lumsden. The Gay News founder, Gay Liberation Front activist and queer rights pioneer has died aged 82 - we look back at his life.
- Wales. The country isn't planning on redefining what a woman is, but draft legislation will include trans women. We explain why the difference is crucial, especially in headlines.
- Pulse Museum. The site of a horrific mass murder and a contentious debate over how it's remembered. We explore why the group behind a memorial museum has given up its plans.
Skip the doomscrolling and support queer creatives instead. We are QueerAF โ and so are you.
Gay News founder Andrew Lumsden dies age 82
TL;DR: Andrew Lumsden: an original member of the Gay Liberation Front; founder of the UKโs first gay publication; a pioneer of LGBTQIA+ rights in the UK - we look back at his legacy.
